Auroville City, India (est.1961), 2015

In 2015 I began to contemplate how certain principles of large-scale intentional, experimental communities might be scaled within Australian cities. I travelled to Auroville, also known as the City of Dawn. For two months I immersed myself in the society, its values and vision.

Auroville was settled in the 1960’s on desolate land a few miles from Puducherry in Tamil Nadu, India. Well over two million trees have been planted, ecosystems have been revitalised and the human population has steadily grown.

Second and third generation Aurovillians continue to nurture their experimental pure, participatory democracy. Every resident and most visitors makes a contribution through their labour, whether for example it be in the medical centre, schools or social enterprises.

Aurovillians have pioneered a number of rational, practical and scalable solutions for sustainable, resilient and inclusive living. Whilst in Auroville I completed a Diploma in Earth Building focussed on arches and vaults.
